Shortboards are designed with less buoyancy than the rider’s body weight.
In terms of size, they are roughly the same size as—or slightly smaller or larger than—the rider’s body.
Riding waves for a long time on one requires skill; even intermediate or advanced surfers sometimes find themselves missing the wave.
Longboards, on the other hand, are designed with buoyancy equal to or greater than the rider’s body weight.
From a physics standpoint, it is easy to see how this allows the board to be pushed by the wave for a longer duration.
It is not simply a matter of longboards being “easier” than shortboards.
Rather, it is about having different ways to enjoy surfing: there are conditions where a longboard is more fun, and times when the board’s ability to fully harness the wave’s power allows for incredibly long, exhilarating rides.
Avoiding an over-reliance on just one type and enjoying a variety of boards is the secret to improving your skills and truly appreciating the world of surfing.
